3 Easy Steps To Becoming A Vegetarian

Many people everyday make the change from regular meat-filled diets to vegetarian diets. Maybe you are one who is on the fence about it and can’t make up your mind, or maybe just don’t know how to get started. It’s really quite simple and like anything else, it just requires a little bit of educating yourself on the subject. With all the information available on the internet and in bookstores these days, you should have no problem getting started. Here are a few steps to take to help you make an easy transition from carnivore to vegetarian.

Educate Yourself

Sound simplistic doesn’t it, but truly if you don’t know what to eat and how to properly combine foods to get complete protein combinations, you could be headed for trouble. Now, don’t take that last line too seriously because you can get protein from lettuce, so if you are eating beans and brown rice and some other good vegetarian foods you will get plenty of protein.

While you are getting ready to make the transition, read everything you can about the subject of vegetarianism, and read plenty of recipes so that you will see how fun the diet can actually be.

I highly recommend you read 3 books and keep them handy to help you better understand the diet and become a pro at being a vegetarian:

1) Fit For Life
2) Diet For A Small Planet
3) Recipes For A Small Planet

The first one is actually very good about leading you into a vegetarian diet a step at a time and it has some wonderful recipes. It focuses on proper food combining which gives the body more energy because it doesn’t expend necessary energy trying to digest poorly combined foods.

The second one is more strict, and maybe too much so, but gives you some good theories about vegetarian diets, and the third has some wonderful recipes to keep the monotony out of the diet. The writers of these books eventually wrote another book stating that claims made about some proteins having to be eaten together were proven to be invalid and as long as it was within several hours, or the same day, you would be fine. Check them out at Amazon.

Stock Up The Cupboard

First, you’ll want to get rid of all meats and meat products. This doesn’t mean throw them away, but as you use them, start to replace them with vegetarian foods like frozen soy and veggie burgers, whole wheat bread, buns and tortillas, various beans and brown rice, etc. One thing you will find you need more of is spices. A lot of vegetarian cooking depends on herbs and spices so in the beginning you will be adding these to your pantry.

Take It Slow

Again, you don’t have to jump right into a pot of beans, so to speak. Just take it slow and work our way into a vegetarian diet. Maybe you could cut out meat a couple meals a week, then start with a couple days, and as you learn more you will soon find that you are looking forward to the diet rather than forcing yourself to do it. Progressing at this pace will allow your body to easily adjust to the diet and you will suffer less gas than if you just started full speed ahead.

By going about the vegetarian diet in the manner described above, you will find that your bodily will adjust easily and you may even find yourself losing weight. Just remember, just because you’re not eating meat doesn’t mean you can eat that half-gallon of ice cream and the box of cookies. Be sensible an you will feel better, be healthier and probably lose weight.
